GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 788867
Stuttering open/close animations under linux >= 4.12 in wayland (fine in xorg)
Last modified: 2021-07-05 14:31:51 UTC
The open and close animations are stuttering under all linux versions greater than or equal to 4.12. This does not happen on xorg under latest 4.13.5 kernel, suggesting that xorg is in a way immune to this problem. The problem also does not occur in the latest 4.9 LTS kernel. A link to the discussed topic can be found here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=230149 On the face of it, it does not appear to be a kernel problem because the open/close animations work fine in xorg. Or perhaps the animations in gnome are not working well with changes in intel i915 drivers since linux 4.12? System: Arch Linux, Gnome 3.26.1 Thinkpad X250 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-5200U CPU Intel HD 5500 graphics
Which exact drivers and versions are being used?
Hi Andre, can you please tell me how I can find this out? I'm relatively new to gnu/linux. If you mean intel drivers, then I am not using any xf86-video-intel driver. However, installing it does not have any impact on wayland session. I am also using mesa 17.2.2-1 Please let me know if you require more information!
does plugging in an external monitor fix it? if so probably https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=102199
No it does not fix it unfortunately.
Could I get a confirmation from someone that I'm not the only one experiencing this problem? Or is this problem only specific to arch linux?
please see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=102963 for the bug report of a possible kernel issue. Right now I'm not sure if this is a gnome issue or a kernel issue. Using the 4.9 LTS kernel definitely solves this problem. The possibilities are: 1.) Is gnome not playing well with the new graphics stack? 2.) IS there a regression in the kernel?
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
