Description Nick Levinson 2017-09-02 22:08:17 UTC
In menus for various apps, in an effect which I assume is due to a recent change to Gnome, alt-key underlinings do not appear until the user uses an arrow key to go to a desired menu item, which is too late. This appears to be part of a new feature whereby alt-key underlinings only appear after an alt key is pressed, which is a good reminder that the key being modified (such as a letter) cannot be pressed before the alt key is, and that is appropriately being applied to the menu titles, but that concern does not apply to menu items.

For example, I should be able to press alt-f to open gedit's File menu and see what alt-key combinations are in that menu, but I can't see them. I can operate one of them if I already know it (such as alt-a for Save As), but I often need to find out what it is.

A solution would be to reprogram so that when an alt key is pressed then not only are immediate underlinings shown but all subsidiary underlinings will be shown immediately upon exposure of the first underlined string to the user.

I don't know if I selected the right product and component for this report.

In fact, underlines are meant to appear (only) when the menu is opened by keyboard, or after pressing a key in the menu; it's not about pressing Alt in the menu specifically; that's just another key in this context.

See the See Also that I'm adding for more on that.

That bit sounds like a bug.
