GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 782467
Crash: g_assertion_message_expr → st_box_layout_child_set_property → ffi_call_unix64 → ffi_call
Last modified: 2021-07-05 14:03:54 UTC
Ubuntu has received a few error reports from Ubuntu 17.04 with this crash signature. The crash appears new to gnome-shell 3.24.1. This error is one of several keeping gnome-shell 3.24.1 from reaching all Ubuntu 17.04 users because Ubuntu has a phased-update system for users who install updates using Ubuntu's update-manager tool. gnome-shell (6) g_assertion_message → g_assertion_message_expr → st_box_layout_child_set_property → ffi_call_unix64 → ffi_call

Is there any log output for context? I'm afraid the traces are a bit of a mystery to me, as the only assertion that matches the messages would be this[0] (at least in gnome-shell/clutter), but it's unclear how that code would be triggered by st_box_layout_child_set_property() ... Ok, there are 4 reports. 3 say that gnome-shell changed since the problem occurred: I think that means the user upgraded from gnome-shell 3.24.0 to 3.24.1 from the time the crash occurred to when it was processed on the user's machine. The other 1 says that libgnome-desktop3 changed (gnome-desktop was upgraded from 3.24.0 to 3.24.1). Ubuntu does not do offline updates at all (yet?) I don't see any other useful context. You could request access to errors.ubuntu.com if you want to look through these error reports yourself. There's a link to do that at https://launchpad.net/bugs/1688535
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
