This is related to gnumeric Bug #759725.
In a GtkTextView, it is nearly impossible to select the first character from left to right.

This is not an innate problem with GtkTextView; I can't reproduce it with basic test cases in GTK+ alone. So we'd need more info about what gnumeric does here:
