Description Morse 2017-04-27 08:20:46 UTC
In Bug 755953 the "shutdown" option was deemed unnecessary for the user, except for virtual machines. I can think of at least 3 use-cases, when someone would want to regularly shutdown a physical box.

1. When working with external hardware. Not all hardware is ok with being unplugged while in suspend. SATA drives come to mind in the first place: not all controllers support SATA hotplug, and this is basically the main difference between SATA and eSATA.

2. When you have several OSes on your box for different tasks. When you finish your work with some OS, you would probably want to shut it down completely, because you do not know which task, and hence, which OS, you'll need next.

3. Suspend may just not work properly, either because of buggy BIOS or malfunctioning hardware. Both problems are unfixable in any kind of upstream, so just not using the suspend would be the only choice in such a case.

So while I won't argue on how often a regular user should use shutdown, it would be really nice to leave at least the possibility of assigning the "shutdown" as an action for the power button.

Another use case:

4. Virtual Machines. Libvirt and virt-manager for example have the possibility to terminate Virtual Machines "nicely". This is done by sending an ACPI event equivalent to a power button press, and can be sent automatically at host system shutdown ensuring a clean shutdown of both host and guests.

GNOME machines as guests currently behave badly in regards to this.

5. This is one is rather personal, but me, personally, I would really really like to have one dedicated button on my computer that i can "press and forget" where I can be sure that my system will be off after a certain period of time.

So from me, also, please, please bring back the config options. They're not hurting anyone.

Yup, there's really no reason not to restore this option. It won't be default behavior, it will reduce complaints, and if users accidentally power off their machines they'll maybe rethink whether they should have set this option.

media-keys: Add "shutdown" as a possible option for power button

In commit 69d9d8b the configuration for the power button action was
added, consisting of three options "suspend", "hibernate", and "nothing".

This commit adds the "shutdown" option, which is needed in various cases.

I'm voting to bring back the "interactive" option as well.
It is a real timesaver when you are working with the keyboard exclusively, as getting to the user menu without a mouse or other pointer is still far from fast or intuitive, especially on laptops.(I'm saying this, because in Bug 755953 the user menu was presented as a workaround, which doesn't work very well for me).
So the next usecase would be:

6. User travels without a mouse. Power-button is a good option to perform the action written on the button.

The reason that this bug was created in the first place was that the previous report on the tracker was closed with "Fixed" while it was clearly not.

It would be very nice for people affected by this bug to have at least one bug that's open, where people can track the progress?

Also some form of acknowledgement (at least of the existance of the issue) and/or response by you or another g-s-d developer would be very appreciated (should probably go on #781108).

bug 781108 is NEW, not FIXED. And it was created just 20 days earlier than this one. Which is almost a coincidence since the "poweroff" option is gone for almost 1.5 years now.

I was talking about Bug 755953 which is marked as "RESOLVED FIXED" when the last dozen or so comments suggest the opposite.
