Now with GNOME on Wayland it would be nice if it was possible to run GDM without X.

You would need to fix mutter to only start XWayland on demand first, bug 759538.

still, we could potentially make GDM support a --disable-xorg or something to configure. Xwayland would still be required, but Xorg wouldn't.

That would kill XDMCP support at the same time for those builders as an added feature.
