Description Severo Raz 2017-01-25 15:17:41 UTC
This is an enhancement request.

Enhancement: allow keyboard shortcuts for tool presets.

When using GIMP for sketching/drawing/painting, it is very useful to use tool presets, like a thin pen and a thick eraser, for example. Changing between these tool presets is something that is sometimes needed very often, thus assigning keyboard shortcuts to tool presets can greatly improve the agility while painting in GIMP.

After reading some similar reports, I understand that it would be useful to
- include tool presets of around 5 brush sizes
- besides enabling adding keyboard shortcuts for individual tool presets, keyboard shortcuts for using last, next, previous and next (cyclic) could be useful too
Comment 2 Severo Raz 2017-01-25 15:37:46 UTC
For cyclic tool preset keyboard shortcut see bug #757331.
For default brush sizes tool presets (though OP doesn't agree with using tool presets for this, but other commenters do) seee bug #740806.

Hi,

Thanks for the report.
So isn't this bug report a duplicate of bug 757331? Or are you asking something different? Because I can't see the difference.
Comment 4 Severo Raz 2017-01-25 22:27:05 UTC
The difference is that this enhancement request asks for a way to select specific tool presets using keyboard shortcuts, in general.

Bug 757331 asks for a way to (with a clickable shortcut) to cycle-select between 5 "favorite" presets.

I think bug 757331 would be solved if this one is solved, but not the other way around.

Ok. Being able to switch tool presets easily makes sense. That's at least worth thinking about it though I'm not sure what should be chosen in the end.

I'm thinking this is also typically a case where maybe an on-canvas easy-access (and visual) menu (as other graphics programs have, often on right click) would be useful, as a much more generic and customizable tool to switch between your favorite options, be them full presets, brushes only, colors, size… This doesn't stop us from adding shortcut capabilities, of course. But the problem of shortcuts is that at some point, you have too many of them and that gets messy. On-canvas customizable menu could be a good in-between of a not-as-fast as shortcut way, yet still quick and generic.

Anyway, setting as NEW.

Yes, a right-click menu would also be very nice to have!
