Description Vít Ondruch 2016-12-14 12:56:28 UTC
In Fedora, there are often coming people asking how to start with packaging, clueless where to find information [1]. I thought that g-s might be good place where to provide such information. E.g. in scenario such as:

1) Open Gnome Software
2) Search for "myfavoriteapp"
3) Application was not found

the generic message could be converted into somethig like "Application was not found, but you can help Fedora with its packaging. Please follow instructions here [2]".

Is there any change to implement something like this? I know this RFE is rather naive and unspecific, but g-s actually need packagers to provide some content and this could be at minimum start of the discussion.

How would we know the application exists upstream, rather than just a typo like "giimp"?

Ok, so put it differently. Lets search for "office". On F26, it gives me 3 entries and non is what I am looking for. So I can imagine there would be the fourth entry, which woud say "Non of the software fulfill your search, help us make distribution better and follow this guide to package your 'office' application.' Of course if I was searching for "giimp" the search result would provide just the "No 'giimp' in our repositories. help us make distribution better ....". Does it make better sense now?

This is a nice idea, and I can see where you're coming from, but I'm not sure we should suggest packaging as an activity for people - it's a bit too technical for a lot of users.

If there were a more accessible thing we could point users to in this situation, that would be good. For instance, if there were a website where people could recommend an app to be included in the distro.

I'm marking this as WONTFIX, but let us know if you know of a good resource we could use for this - the idea's a good one!
