GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 770187
no useful error when gstreamer decoder missing
Last modified: 2020-03-17 09:54:55 UTC
When attempting to play a media file in Banshee for which no gstreamer decoder plugin is installed, no useful error message is produced, leaving the problem a complete mystery to the user. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS Using Banshee without gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly installed, attempt to play an MP3 file in a set of MP3 files. Playback fails, a red "X" icon appears in the list of media, and (assuming the following files are also not supported), red "X" icons appear for the next 4 files, after which no more playback is attempted. WHAT I EXPECT TO HAPPEN A useful error message should pop up when attempting to play a file for which no usable decoder is installed.
Banshee is not under active development anymore and had its last code changes more than three years ago. Its codebase has been archived. Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect reality. Please feel free to reopen this ticket (or rather transfer the project to GNOME Gitlab, as GNOME Bugzilla is being shut down) if anyone takes the responsibility for active development again.
