Description Jo 2016-02-22 13:38:07 UTC
i know its pretty simple to add an alpha layer manually.
However, would if imported images (smaller than the current canvas size) would get an alpha layer automatically.

I agree that having an alpha channel is a better default (in my opinion at least). This said, this seems to already be the default, at least on master (GIMP 2.8.16 not tested). On my tests, images opened as layers get the alpha channel.

Have you tested the dev version?
Comment 2 Jo 2016-02-29 22:10:51 UTC
cant accept dev versions, already the official, stable version of Gimp.org or the version from Lisanet arent so solid rock, at least on Mac Osx and for my very extensive use.
Comment 3 Michael Schumacher 2016-03-03 07:07:00 UTC
It won't change for 2.8.
Comment 4 Michael Natterer 2017-02-15 13:12:20 UTC
Resolving as duplicate of the newer bug 778523 which also mentions
the newly added import/export policies in prefs.
