GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 757561
[regression] Up/down arrow keys (and shift selection) doesn't work after moving mails across folders while inside a search query's results
Last modified: 2015-11-26 08:27:35 UTC
I used to be able to select a range of emails by going using shift+down/up arrows, but this doesn't do anything anymore in Evolution 3.18.1. Note that this is on Xorg (haven't tested Wayland for this one).
Huh. After alt-tabbing back to the app, it works and I can't reproduce it now. Go figure. Quickest bug resolution ever.
Oh, I found the cause, it has something to do with the searchbar/search entry. When I'm in the situation where the shift+up/down doesn't work, what actually happens is not that the shift+down/up combo doesn't work, but that the up/down arrow keys don't work. Instead of being applied to the treeview where the individual messages are, the up/down arrows change the focus across the window. I can see that because when I alternately press up/down, the search entry gets focused/defocused. Things I tried to do to "fix" it and get out of the lock (unsuccessfully): - Alt+tabbing in and out of the app - Trying to ctrl+click select items - Tabbing across widgets - Clicking/changing folders The only thing that I did that got me out of the arrow keys "lock" is to double-click a message in the list to open the message reading window. Upon closing it, behavior came back to normal and I could shift-select. *But* as I found out later, you need to have your search field cleared for this to work (see below). So, after much messing around, I finally found the way to trigger this bug: 1. In a folder, search for something. 2. Select a couple of emails (with shift+downdowndown), and drag them to another folder to move them 3. Result: you can't use the up/down keys properly anymore (as noted above), which breaks the shift+up/down selection feature. The only way to unbreak it is to 1) clear the search entry 2) open an individual message.
Tested on 3.16, and it really seems to be regression introduced in 3.18.
Thanks for a bug report. I tried to reproduce this with changes from bug #755730 and I cannot reproduce it. It'll be available in the Evolution 3.18.2, which will be released the next week. Please retest with that version, once it's available in your distribution. Thanks in advance.
Nope, still happens with 3.18.2, and reproducible with the steps at the end of comment #2 (as well as the fact that it just seems to happen at random times many times per day for me...)
It should also be mentioned that when this occurs, I typically can't use the Delete key either.
The bug #755730 received another update a week later after my comment here, with a change for 3.18.3. I have confirmations from other users that the change finally fixed what I caused. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 755730 ***
