GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 757415
Copy / Move progress indicator is too subtle and easy to miss
Last modified: 2015-12-05 17:05:22 UTC
Since I don't copy huge files around every day, I often forget that we have a progress indicator hidden within the file manager window. This causes me to think the operation was complete so I start doing stuff with the copied files, and only then I realize that it's still ongoing. This indicator needs to become less subtle... either by making some animation to point to it (in a way that won't be *too* intrusive... maybe like the animation Firefox has to point to its download progress indicator?), or by using a progress notification like on Android (something our platform doesn't have right now) or anything else the designers can think of. Before this indicator was a thing, there used to be a progress window, and it appeared on the screen in such a way you couldn't easily miss it. I'm not asking for that window back, but I'm sure we can make the indicator as noticeable as this window was, somehow.
Are you really still using ancient version 3.15?
No, this is about the progress indicator introduced in 3.18. I simply didn't notice the version field when filing the bug, usually the default of that field is the latest version so I didn't even look at it.
Hi, I was just about to report. I think Elad is spot on: I've noticed a few users that I administer with Gnome ask me why nothing is happening when they move large files. I've found that I can miss it myself, too. There's not really any indication of an initiated transfer past a tiny little button that just appears with no fanfare. While I'm not specifically advocating for the above mentioned firefox-like animation, such a design guarantees that there is no room for missing it.
This is apparently a duplicate of bug #753728 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 753728 ***
