Hamburger menu lacks Preferences item

Call me stupid but I can't figure out how to get to the menu when running eog from i3-wm. The help file says, "Click Edit ▸ Preferences to start changing the preferences", but there is no Edit menu... only the hamburger button that has neither an Edit nor a Preferences menu item.

Looking through the help file it has several outdated references to the old-style menubar, for instance "Click View ▸ Slideshow to show all of the pictures in a folder as a slideshow" too.

You should get an app icon with a menu at the left side of the headerbar. Not clear why that is not happening for you with i3.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/eog/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
