gedit semble ne pas distinguer l'apostrophes des autres caractères de ponctuation.

pour le reproduire:
1. ouvrir gedit
2. activer la vérification d'orthographe
3. selectionner la langue française.
3. écrire par éxemple "aujourd'hui"

le mot aujourd'hui est souligné en rouge,
la vérification nous propose de remplacer la partie "aujourd" par "aujourd'hui" ce qui donnera "aujourd'hui'hui".

Il semble que les apostrophes sont considérés comme la fin d'un mot comme l'espace blanc ou la virgule.
