GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 747173
Should have a better symbolic icon
Last modified: 2018-05-22 12:24:24 UTC
It would be nice to have a more distinctive symbolic icon for Chess. The current icon looks as much like a checkers board as it does a chess board. An image of a knight would be ideal, if possible.
Knight has a i18n problem in France and Belgium, as our local version of Pachisi/Parcheesi/Ludo is called “Petits chevaux”[1] (“Little Horses”) and is played with such pieces. It may also conflict with any app focusing on (real) horses. A pawn hasn’t I think an enough distinctive shape, as many race games are played with pieces of a similar shape (Ludo, Snake and Ladder…). Bishop and Rook might be good enough, but I don’t really see why focusing on them. Queen (in its usual five-points crown[2]) is probably a good choice, even if it would be an easy representation of the Amazons game or other chess-pieces-based games. King is for me the best choice (in its usual representation[3]). The cross on the crown might have to be reduced as possible, as it’s maybe not an universal representation.
