GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 746850
xorg crashes on login in 3.16
Last modified: 2016-01-11 18:15:36 UTC
Opposite problem from 746771, I can log into 3.16 way land but NOT X. Icewm (X) fails also. I am running openSUSE 13.2 Tumbleweed and upgraded gnome from the gnome:Next repo. All other packages are tumbleweed current version.
can you set Enable=true in the [debug] section of /etc/gdm/custom.conf , reproduce and then attach the journal logs? Does adding yourself to the "video" group make it spontaneously start working?
(In reply to Rick from comment #0) > I am running openSUSE 13.2 Tumbleweed and upgraded gnome As there is nothing such as openSUSE 13.2 Tumbleweed, I'd like to verify also your repositories. AS for the distributions: - There is openSUSE 13.2 and there is the rolling distribution openSUSE Tumbleweed; they do not overlap / intersect (except that 13.2 was branched off of Tumbleweed last October - but that;s it) zypper lr -u please
sorry... just tumbleweed... I had to re-install my system, so I can't give a repo list exactly, but I had: Tumbleweed repos (update, oss, non-oss), and 13.2 update. I had added GNOME:Next for the dup. I had Pacman also, but I probably disabled it for dup, along with GNOME:Apps... so the dup only included 4 repos...
well, I tried to install the latest openSUSE gnome 3.16 live image in virtualbox (instead of running it as a live image). I still couldn't get a display - no login screen. I did get a command prompt though and started Yast live installer from there. I got this error when validating the partition setup: undefined method '[]' for nil.NilClass caller: /usr/share/YaST/lib/installation/proposal_store.rb:181:in 'block in ... the text is cut off. Anyway, YaST is a different issue... I tried startx and got a crash with: Fatal server error, no screens found. According to the error log, X can't find a vboxvideo module. That doesn't help for a "real" system though - which wouldn't use vboxvideo... @Ray, I tried adding the default "linux" cd user to the video group, enabling debugging, and then launching gdm (as root) but gdm exited with error code 70... /var/log/gdm is empty the "teminal" output from gdm says port 6000 is closed. then it fails to get hashtable->version, so it unbuffers the display... Hope that helps some - I don't know how to get anything else out of the tty display in virtualbox, so I can't copy/paste the output...
