GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 746516
Nautilus fails when moving files from a smb share to another (creates a folder named by the file)
Last modified: 2016-11-19 12:31:12 UTC
I'm trying to move a file from one smb share (with underlying ntfs filesystem) to another smb share (with underlying ext4 filesystem) by cutting (ctrl+x) and pasting (ctrl+v). [I mentioned the underlying filesystems but it actually doesn't matter. moving from ext4 share to another ext4 share doesn't work too.] Nautilus gives me an "Error while moving."-message and describes it with "There was an error reading the folder [...].“. "Show more details" tells me "No such file or directory". I click cancel and Nautilus creates a folder (sic!) with the exact name as the file i want to move. So if i try to move the file "foo.baz" it creates the _folder_ "foo.baz" in my target smb share. Copying files works without any problems as far as i can see. On my virtualbox win7 moving works flawlessly. So I think it is a problem in nautilus. And i think this problem occures for about 4 weeks now. Bug probably came with an update. smb log tells me nothing. samba server is Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS OS with samba package version 2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2.14.04.7. ---- Description: Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS Release: 14.04 ------------------------------------------------- apt-cache policy nautilus nautilus: Installed: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu15.1 Candidate: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu15.1 Version table: *** 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu15.1 0 500 http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ utopic-updates/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu15 0 500 http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ utopic/main i386 Packages -------------------------------------------------- samba: Installed: 2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2.14.04.7 Candidate: 2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2.14.04.7 Version table: *** 2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2.14.04.7 0 500 http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-updates/main amd64 Packages 500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-security/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2 0 500 http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/main amd64 Packages

Thanks for taking the time to report this. However, you are using a version that is too old and not supported anymore by GNOME developers. GNOME developers are no longer working on that version, so unfortunately there will not be any bug fixes by GNOME developers for the version that you use. By upgrading to a newer version of GNOME you could receive bug fixes and new functionality. You need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain a newer version of GNOME. Please feel free to reset the "NEEDINFO" status of this bug report if the problem still occurs with a recent version of GNOME (3.14 or newer) > And i think this problem occures for about 4 weeks now. Bug probably came > with an update. That sounds like a good reason to debug this downstream in Ubuntu's Launchpad and find out which update happened around that time. :)
