GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 744760
No ability to transcode when transferring to MTP device
Last modified: 2018-05-24 18:28:40 UTC
I have most of my music in FLAC format. When I plug in an MTP phone and transfer songs to it, it simply copies the FLAC files over. This isn't really what I want, as the phone only has a certain amount of internal storage. I'd much rather have them transcoded to Vorbis. There doesn't appear to be any way to do this, though; Rhythmbox has no UI for it, and .is_audio_player files don't seem to be honoured in MTP mode (I tried sticking one in the root of the storage tree, but no dice). It would be nice if RB at least had an option to do this.
If your device didn't report that it supports FLAC, rhythmbox would transcode to some other format that it supports. Not that that helps you at all. A while ago, I tried implementing per-device encoding settings, but I think I gave up because storing settings on MTP devices is painful.
Just an app-wide setting would work, for me. It seems like a fairly common requirement - just because the player *can* play FLACs doesn't necessarily mean people want their fairly-small storage space taken up by them... (FWIW, Banshee has a setting for this but it seems to be broken :>)
