GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 744157
Tip about subaccount is confusing
Last modified: 2018-06-29 23:38:26 UTC
The following tip got me confused: "Want to see all your subaccount transactions in one register? From the main menu, highlight the parent account and select Accounts -> Open Subaccounts from the menu." I either misunderstand which context this can be used in or the tip is wrong in its wording. When in the "accounts" tab, just after opening the application, if I select an account, the menues avilable does not include one called "Accounts", but rather a "View" menu, which contains an "Open Subaccounts" entry. On the other hand, there is a context menu (right-click the account that has sub-accounts), which has an "Open Subaccounts". So, unless I'm confused about the context in which I could use the tip, a better wording should be either or both of "select View -> Open Subaccounts", and "right-click -> Open Subaccounts". I'm not in love with the term "right-click". What you do is to "post" or "show" a context-menu -- on a mac its done using control-click, or possibly a click-hold or long-click, but I guess it's better to describe UI-actions in terms of what you do, rather than how to do it, but then again, in a tip-of-the-day, or any other documentation, it's sometimes exactly the purpose to teach the user _how_ to do things. The About box shows my version os 2.6.5 with the following build information: git rev 23d0f79+ on 2014-12-19
Thank you for reporting this. The wording of the tip is indeed no longer in line with the way the menus are currently structured. And in addition it doesn't make sense to "highlight the parent account from the main menu". That sentence somehow got rather twisted. Personally I prefer the "select View -> Open Subaccounts" format.
At the same time as fixing the tip mentioned in this bug, I want to make a few minor changes to other tips. One I'm not sure about: If you work overnight, you should close and reopen your working register after midnight, to get the new date as default for new transactions. It is not necessary to restart GnuCash therefore. If you have multiple transaction registers open, is it necessary to reopen each, or just the one you are currently working in?
It's not necessary to close any of them. You can always just enter the correct date. Closing and reopening just re-creates the blank transaction (the one you edit to make a new one) with the current date.
I tested this by leaving my PC on overnight last night. It is necessary to reopen each register that you want to have the default date updated. If you just reopen 1, any others do not have the default date updated.
