Description Frédéric Parrenin 2014-12-17 13:05:45 UTC
When I use email softwares, I often need multiple instances at the same time.
For example, I read previous emails when writing a new one.
In gmail, this is easy: you open multiple instances of gmail in different tabs.
But I don't find this functionnality in geary.
For me this is a must-have if I want to replace gmail by geary.

You can already move composers to separate windows.

Bug #713884 asks to be able to open individual emails in separate windows. Are you asking for more than that?
Comment 2 Frédéric Parrenin 2014-12-17 19:08:20 UTC
OK, thanks for the tip about the composer.
I think bug #713884 would make it for me for the remaining cases when I need two windows.

After more thoughts, I still think allowing multiple geary windows would be valuable. For example, you could have one window for checking new emails and one for searching through old emails. This would not be possible with the detach approach which only allow for a fixed view.
Actually, I just checked that the mailer on OSX allows for multiple windows.

This bug still exists in 0.12.0.
Comment 6 Michael Gratton 2018-01-09 23:12:50 UTC
I don't think tabs are appropriate, but multiple main windows definitely are something we want to be able to support.

Fix for this is landing in https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/geary/merge_requests/366, will be released in 3.36.
