installed gnome 1.4 and when loggin in it crashes with a fatal error

>How-To-Repeat:
installed gnome 1.4 as root using terminal in CDE.
rebooted. at login screen chose -> session ->gnome 1.4.
prompted me for login and password. then i get a message that
it couldn't find the ip address of the machine. i press continue and 
i get another window stating that it is crashing
on a fatal error.

try upgrading to the latest gnome-libs and gnome-core, or delete your
~/.gnome/panel.d/* dir (or higher) if there are possible corruptions.
