Screen shot After the unsuccesful attempt to open XCF file...

I cannot open the XCF file I've eben working on for hours. Size is 400MB, that shouldn't be the problem.
GIMP says that one layer has to be opened at least. But the picture contains several layers.

You might want to check out the attached screen shot please or the link:
http://fc-foto.de/34585260

The preview in GIMP is fine and shows me the picture in the way when I closed it.

I understand that there are issues with a Lot of zeros in XCF files that are the probable reason for this bug but I have not the faintest idea on how to get my file back.

I could do the work on the picture again BUT I'm afraid this will happen to me (as well as other users on different platforms) again (and again...)

Any help is appreciated!

Oliver

For information, Oliver sent the file privately to me. I confirm the issue. But I'm not sure to be able to make the time to look into this right now. Furthermore I imagine someone else may know better the issue than I.

If another GIMP dev wants the file, ask me, and I'll give the link privately, since I understood that the user does not want it to be public. Please Oliver, confirm me this is the case. Otherwise, I may as well write down the link here, this will simplify things much.

There was some discussion about whether a GIMP with Massimo's changes (aka the recent ones) should just load the image. But then, this should also not happen anymore at all.

I'll be glad to spare the picture with you. (no dirty stuff :) ! )
Jehan, please be so kind and share the link.

I just went through:
"Bug 730211 - Extra zeroes appear in XCF files (was: after saving and closing .xcf files, they open empty - please help!)"

It looks to me like a pain in the rear and I can't tell you how much I respect your work.

Greetings,

Oliver

If you take a look at the message-picture-link http://fc-foto.de/34585260
you can see that the sum of the jpg's in the file is not more than 150MB.
(Not all of the jpg's are used as a layer...).

I can post the link myself, didn't think about it...

Ahahah. I was more thinking about whether that were copyrighted material, for a job or something. But yeah, this too, why not. :-)

Can you pack this file with gzip, please? I've tried to download it a few times now, and always had to abort because of some interruptions :)
Comment 8 Oliver 2014-09-21 13:17:59 UTC
Just did this.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/3famhtajwavfxc5/XCF%20doesn%27t%20open.zip?dl=0

Amazing, that the zipped file is only 465 KB when the layers had about 10 MB.

Greetings,

Oliver

zipped file
Comment 10 Michael Schumacher 2015-06-06 11:33:52 UTC
Being zippable that small means that there should be mostly zeroes in the file - and thus likely a duplicate of bug 730211, or at least related.
Comment 11 Michael Schumacher 2017-02-10 13:19:08 UTC
Resolving as incomplete. There's likely nothing we can do, anyway.
