GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 729993
Menu Icons support is missing
Last modified: 2017-08-14 23:28:55 UTC
Hey! I'm aware of this commit: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?h=gtk-3-10&id=e8147d15f74e62047c84eb95e393449722198d89 which removes the support. This is IMHO a bug, as you can also read in various blog posts. I think many users will quit using gnome if this is no longer possible - at least i am one of those. I /strongly/ vote for re-adding this support.
ah, i found this: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?id=627a03683f5f41efbfc86cc0f10e1b7c11e9bb25 so explicit re-enable works again... however i still vote for this bug to avoid removal of this option!
Bugzilla is not a voting platform. if you want to raise awareness of the issue, you can use gtk-devel-list. I strongly encourage you to look at the mailing list archives before doing so. application developers can still add icons explicitly to their menu items (and buttons), and the GMenu API allows adding items with icons as well. what's missing is a global hammer-like configuration option that not only applies only to GTK+ applications, but also modifies the intent of the application developers with ill-defined consequences.
