GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 728661
Offer a way to not rely on Tracker
Last modified: 2018-01-06 13:35:26 UTC
Photos relies on Tracker to find images files, this raises some issues: - it is slow - Photos is unable to show all photos in the library (we have to use the "show more" button) - as the user doesn't specify a folder for his photos, all image files are loaded into Photos even if they are not "photos" Personaly, I don't care if this Tracker way will be removed or not, but it would be really useful to work "the old way", by giving a top folder for Photos to work on.
(In reply to comment #0) > Photos relies on Tracker to find images files, this raises some issues: > - it is slow What is slow (tracker or gnome-photos)? What were you trying to do that was slow? > - Photos is unable to show all photos in the library (we have to use > the "show more" button) So? > - as the user doesn't specify a folder for his photos, all image files are > loaded into Photos even if they are not "photos" We try to filter out as many non-photo images as possible. For starters we only look at ~/Pictures, ~/Downloads (which we will remove in future) and your online storage. We leave out SVGs. Ofcourse we can improve our heuristics, but even then it is not "all image files" at the moment. > Personaly, I don't care if this Tracker way will be removed or not, but it > would be really useful to work "the old way", by giving a top folder for Photos > to work on. If you like "the old way" then use Files (or nautilus). Photos, like the other content applications, is meant to be an alternative way of accessing your content without having to think about files and folders. If files and folders are what you want then use a file manager. Closing as WONTFIX.
If it is "Closing as WONTFIX." Why are you asking questions? That's the second PR I've to deal with you, and honestly, it's not a pleasant experience. This may come from something inappropriate the way I've written my PR, don't hesitate to say. English is not my native language. But the way your answer the PR is totally the one we can read on the Internet about complaints against Gnome developers attitude. Personally, I don't care, this won't stop me to use Gnome. This just will lead me to not trying to get involved anymore.

So by "Closing as WONTFIX." on one hand, and asking questions on the other hand, you send 2 opposites signals to the person who's trying to participate here. First signal says "Dialog is not possible" Second signal says "I do NOT accept your PR, but I'm open to discuss". Why discussing if your first action is to reject the PR? Again, from a user point of view, that's not a really clear way to behave with people who're trying to participate. My 2 cents.

This has been closed as WONTFIX because we are not going to offer replaceable "backends" for retrieving content. If there are performance issues with Tracker we should try to locate and fix them. I am still waiting for your answer as to what exactly is slow. > First signal says "Dialog is not possible" > Second signal says "I do NOT accept your PR, but I'm open to discuss". This is bugzilla - a bug tracker, not a discussion forum for open ended discussion. Lets be concise and focus on concrete issues. For open ended discussion, please use IRC or something else.

WONTFIX just means that the maintainer of a module is actively against the proposed enhancement in a PR because s/he thinks that it's not the right thing to do. It does not mean that the maintainer is not interested in the underlying reasons for the problems which you are experiencing, which led you to proposing *one* potential solution in this ticket, while other solutions to improve those problems might be possible and supported by the maintainer.
Thanks André, that sounds fair.
