Currently, if a preview text is set on startup, the font chooser widget will show both the font name and a preview below the name, for every font.

This ends up being very messy visually and the font previews significantly outweigh the font names... which is sometimes what you're looking for.

It would be more reasonable if the font previews were shown in gray/half-transparent so that they don't pop out/distract so much.

I think you just want a different dialog - the font previews are _meant_ to be the prominent part of this dialog... it is what you select the fonts by.
