Description Rafael Luik 2014-01-26 07:40:47 UTC
User trying to find the system monitor / task manager...
1. Okay let's press Ctrl+Alt+Del... Not there.
2. Ctrl+Shift+Esc... Nothing happens.
3. Ctrl+Esc... Nope.

Result:
In GNOME there isn't a keyboard shortcut to the system monitor.

Expected:
Should use a common shortcut.

In Windows it's Ctrl+Shift+Esc and also found in the Ctrl+Alt+Del menu.
In KDE it's Ctrl+Esc.

Proposing WONTFIX - I don't see a specific reason yet why this specific application should have a shortcut.
Could you clarify please?
Comment 2 Rafael Luik 2014-01-26 23:01:00 UTC
It's just common for Windows users (and even more for me as I used KDE before GNOME).

The functionality is so expected that there are even tutorials on the web specifically to show how to add the shortcut.
Comment 3 Robert Roth 2014-02-28 09:24:18 UTC
My comments here are that:
1. Looking at the current shortcuts list for launchers we only have applications which might have hardware keys on the keyboard, no other applications with shortcuts
2. Ubuntu has also added the shortcut to start system monitor
3. This can not be fixed in System monitor, this has to be fixed in gnome-settings-daemon

Please note, that if you want, you can easily assign a keyboard shortcut to System Monitor using the Shortcuts tab on Control Center's Keyboard panel.

Reassigning this bug to gnome-settings-daemon.

Indeed. I'd rather make it easier to launch applications in the keyboard shortcuts, instead of adding each and every application to the shortcuts.

This is not a duplicate of 583884.

I wasn't asking for an option do do it. I was suggestion something better for other/new users.

If you really want to close this bug with a "no" the correct resolution would be WontFix.

You wanted something hard-coded, I understand that. I don't think that having a keyboard shortcut for the task manager is generally useful.

A duplicate is fine, we won't add the shortcut you requested, but making it easier to add new applications means that the people who need it will be able to do so easily.
