Unity is everywhere in Ubuntu. It would be nice to see the settings found in
that gear icon at the top right of the application to instead find its place
on the unity top bar.

When you say settings, you mean the menu items in the gear menu should appear
in the top Unity bar, i.e. where the word "Geary" appears? From what we
understand, using a GMenu (#5262) will solve this problem.

I believe John meant the menu items, and this was done in bug #713018.
