What server or service are you using? Are you using server filtering to get
the messages into different folders?

Hi Jim

I'm using Zimbra as an IMAP server, and yes, I filter those messages into
different folders. Sometimes I need to 'hunt' multiple folders (labels) to
find that message that makes all my thread 'unread'.

We need to look at Zimbra, but it's possible the filter creates a copy of the
message rather than links to them in the other folders. If so, that would
explain this behavior.

I believe that Jim's last comment explains the issue.

I'm adding in Cc Frederic, who uses Zimbra and might share some useful information.

I'll set this as NEEDINFO for the moment.
Comment 2 Michael Gratton 2018-01-15 23:10:03 UTC
This is probably true still, and is something we're going to have to handle better once we do a better job merging identical email (Bug 750695). Since in IMAP each message in each position folder has its own flags, we need to to go find and explicitly mark as read all copies when merged messages are flagged.
Comment 3 GNOME Infrastructure Team 2021-07-05 13:25:13 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/geary/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
