I've ticketed this at #7436.

I've just hit this missing feature in a slightly different situation: the empty trash button in Geary won't delete a label/folder previously deleted in the webmail. It acts only on messages.
Comment 2 Federico Bruni 2018-01-01 17:58:20 UTC
Should this include Labels as well as Folders?

PS
With regard to comment 1 from me, I don't think it makes any sense.

Yup, since labels/folders are both IMAP mailboxes.

That's related, but probably a separate bug.
Comment 4 Ricardo Rodrigues 2019-01-24 21:20:56 UTC
Any news on the implementation of this feature?

I would suggest the use of right-click to allow renaming/deletion of a specific Label, yet no right-click behavior is present for any element on the left panel. I recommend looking into Mailspring and how it behaves.

For adding a new label I would recommend either a '+' button right of the Labels section, or a right-click behavior on said section.
Comment 5 Michael Gratton 2019-01-29 12:43:04 UTC
For me it's pretty much blocked on Bug 730712, per "Depends on" above. If someone wants to contribute a stop-gap solution before then, I'd be happy to work with them on that.
Comment 6 GNOME Infrastructure Team 2021-07-05 13:24:49 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/geary/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
