From Ubuntu bug report #1154713 [1]:

"After selecting 'show hidden and backup files' in the view tab of the preferences menu, hidden and backup files don't appear in the current window, or even browsing to other windows. If I open a new window, the new window will now show the hidden files properly."

It's confirmed on Ubuntu 13.04 (-> Nautilus 3.6; Ctrl+H does work normally) and 13.10 (-> Nautilus 3.8), but not on Ubuntu 12.04 (-> Nautilus 3.4).

This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but we are happy to tell you that the problem has already been fixed. It should be solved in nautilus 3.10.
