Last modified: 2014-01-30 22:09:57 UTC
Created attachment 256823 [details] screenshot from VM - 2 software tools report different status regarding to update availability Previously reported in Fedora https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1017137 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Zdenek Chmelar 2013-10-09 06:07:43 EDT filed: screenshot from VM - 2 software tools report different status regarding to update availability Description of problem: Gnome-software shows 'Software is up to date' even if new packages are available and offered for an update in software update application. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): gnome-software-3.10.0-1.fc20.x86_64 How reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open Gnome-software 2. Jump on tab 'Updates' 3. User see message about upated system 4. Open software update tool and let it load - new packages are available for download and installation Actual results: Software tool shows updated system even if new packages are available for download Expected results: show list of packages available for installation, if applicable. Additional info: Available packages were listed in one of previous gnome-software versions (do not remember which version worked for the last time) but it does not work with actual version. Please see screenshot for exact problem description
The two tools actually display different things. gpk-update-viewer shows if there are updates in the repositories gnome-software shows if an offline update has been completely downloaded and prepared and is ready to install
So I'd tend to say: not a bug
Even if the time while downloading is out of sync, I have encountered issues where gnome-software has told me that there have been updates available, i didnt do anything about it, and when i went back to gnome-software it told me that everything was up-to-date.
I understand the point explained by Matthias. On the other hand, as gnome-software will be the main and only tool for package manipulation (install, remove, update or even upgrade) in Gnome, I would prefer to have some possibility to check available packages now and not when gnome-software tool offers it (like button 'Check Now' for example). I use gnome-software for couple of weeks (even months) now and I do not remember when I was told about available packages in gnome-software for the last time. I have to use command line for updates each time. Well I propose to add 'check now' feature (e.g. button on the 'Updates' tab)
I've just stumbled across this too. On Fedora 20 yum knows there are updates but gnome-software does not. The question becomes how do I force gnome-software to check for updates? At the moment it is not straightforward to find out the answer. Poking around at the command line, I see that there is a gpk-prefs program which does not seem to be linked to from the launcher, gnome-software or gnome-control-center. Within it there is a Check Now button but it does not seem to do anything. If someone would be kind enough to reopen this bug I would have two suggestions: 1. Make gpk-prefs part of gnome-control-centre. 2. Add a menu item to gpk-prefs in gnome-software. 3. Make gpk-prefs "Update Now" show feedback. 4. Somehow let a search for the word updates find gnome-software . 5. Make it clear that gnome-software can update all programs not just the GUI ones it chooses to display.
