Hi Jeremy, thanks for taking a look at this :)
I tried out your patch out of curiosity, by applying it onto master and

./autogen.sh && make && ./bin/pitivi

Are you sure about the changes (replacing ghelp:// by help://) in configure.py.in? This seems to break displaying the user help from the application (ex: clicking the "Help" or "Keyboard shortcuts" button from the Welcome dialog). Reverting the changes in configure.py.in makes it work on my local checkout (haven't tried systemwide or anything).

Oh and it seems that this is a duplicate of bug 687563? (somehow wasn't able to find it a few mins ago, but I had a "feeling" I had seen this before...)

Oh I'm forgetful since I saw that bug earlier today. It looks like Oliver caught one extra file (.gitignore) than I did.

Yes, I'm sure that help: is correct.

If you used jhbuild you could verify by running
jhbuild run yelp help:pitivi
or jhbuild run pitivi

I assume it isn't working for you since you haven't installed the help to $XDG_DATA_DIRS or $XDG_DATA_HOME.

help: instead of ghelp: is also mentioned on the GNOME wiki page.
