GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 696493
can't open directory context menu when list view fills window
Last modified: 2013-03-24 21:44:26 UTC
Nautilus offers a couple of different context menus. When I right click on a file, I get a context menu offering Cut, Copy, Move To and so on. When I right click on empty space in a Nautilus window, I get a directory context menu offering New Folder, Open in Terminal (if I've installed the nautilus-open-terminal extension) and so on. Unfortunately when I'm in the list view and there are enough files to fill the current window, there's no way I can get to the directory context menu, since there's no empty space where I can click to get it. This is a significant usability problem. (This isn't an issue in icon view, where I can click in the empty space between two icons to get to the directory context menu.) Some possible solutions to this might be - When I right click on empty space in the list view (e.g. between a filename and its item count), do not automatically select the row and display the file context menu; instead, just display the directory context menu. - Display the directory context menu when I right click an empty area in the toolbar above. - Include all items from the directory context menu in the context menu which appears when I right click the current folder name in the toolbar. (Currently that context menu does not include New Folder or Open in Terminal, for instance.)
Aha - I just realized that the menu items in question (e.g. New Folder) are always available from the gear menu. That certainly helps. But I still think it would be nice to be able to get to the directory context menu by right clicking somewhere in this situation.
