GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 693617
REQUEST: Universal smooth scrolling?
Last modified: 2013-02-12 04:57:26 UTC
I enjoy the smooth scrolling in current versions of Firefox. Can someone implement smooth scrolling to work in all apps within Gnome Shell? It would certainly be a more minor change than the recent aesthetic enhancements that have been made to the scrollbar.

No. Scrolling is the job of the applications. The window manager has no say here. We do have smooth scrolling for scrolling inside the shell itself (like the app view in the overview). > It would > certainly be a more minor change than the recent aesthetic enhancements that > have been made to the scrollbar. This needs to be done at the toolkit level (gtk, qt etc). I am marking this as a dup of the gtk bug. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 103811 ***

Or am I still missing something?
Smooth scrolling that uses accurate input from a mouse or touchpad has already been implemented in GTK+, and it's used in nautilus. Smooth scrolling like Firefox does where it animates the scrollbar isn't done, and I'm not sure we want it done. The other kind of smooth scrolling is much better.
Ok well I'm obviously out of my depth here, so I'll leave the issue closed. Although I must say, the smooth scrolling I get in FF is a little nicer (from an end-user perspective) than what's in nautilus, which just seems like ... regular scrolling.
