While at runlevel 5, if the X server is exited via CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE, the next login will always cause panel to segfault.  This has been reproduced across 3 machines with different video hardware, several boots each, several attempts each.

Exiting gnome via normal logout causes no problems.

Please try the newly released gnome-core-1.4.0.5. I made a package you
can try which is at
http://www.gnome.org/~kmaraas/gnome-core-1.4.0.5-1.i386.rpm

There's also a new gnome-libs out which is needed for this. Package in
the same above dir...
