Description darkxst 2012-10-25 01:53:34 UTC
This is not really a bug, but more an idea/feature proposal.

Basically we are trying to come up with a nice easy way to install alternate apps on Ubuntu GNOME remix. for example we ship ephipany (web) as default browser but many users want firefox/chromium instead.

I thought it might nice to be able to do this via the default applications panel. For example, even if you only have epiphany installed, the web dropdown would still show firefox/chrome or other common options (probably greyed out or otherwise indicating "not installed"), and clicking on that entry would install app via package kit.

Is this something you might be interested in including upstream?

You completely misread the label of the other bug. It's the panel that's hard to find, not the contents.
Comment 2 darkxst 2012-10-25 06:03:55 UTC
No I didnt misread it, I linked that since I figure its kind of important that the panel is easily findable to make such a feature worthwhile. (I had meant to leave a comment to that intent, but got tied up with other stuff).

Anyway back to original topic of this bug report, is that something you would be interested including? If so, I am happy to work on it and provide patches, I just really don't want to add to the ridiculous stack of 50 odd ubuntu patches against this package. It just causes issues, overall.

Imo, software installation is the job for the software installer, not a control-center panel.

Ditto.
Comment 5 Bastien Nocera 2013-04-19 09:31:05 UTC
As per comment 3 and 4, installation of alternate software should be done in a separate "software" application.
