Spreadsheets are a particularly bad example; previewing them in some odd rendered pdf format is somewhat unexpected and disorienting.

Some time ago there was talk of embedding LibreOffice. I saw Michael Meeks mention something in that direction in GUADEC 2013.

I don't know what is the status.
