Inside the text editing area, the text is not displayed correctly. For example, the following Malayalam text ബീറ്റ്റൂട്ട് will be displayed correctly even in notepad but not in GIMP.

A search for malayalam finds bug 549818, is this related?

Seems like bug 549818 is the technical way to explain the same issue.
