Description Thomas Ward 2012-05-10 23:09:10 UTC
Originally posted on Launchpad.net against the 'totem' package in Ubuntu (upstreamed to here by a member of the Ubuntu BugSquad). (LaunchPad Bug #402962 - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/402962)

------

Totem inhibits the screensaver as soon as anything is playing. But sometimes I use totem to play music, and keep it minimize. As soon as the music starts, I don't get non-critical notifications.

I guess totem does it because if you're watching a clip in non-fullscreen mode, you don't want the screensaver to appear, but you may still want to get your notifications.

(Summarizatioon and additional information by secondary poster to the LP bug)

Totem inhibits the screensaver by default when music is playing. This does not seem to make sense. ... the screensaver should inhibit only when Totem is playing a full-screen video -- not a windowed video, and certainly not music. So it is Totem that needs fixing here.

Totem only disables the screensaver on audio if you tell it to in the preferences:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/totem/tree/src/plugins/screensaver/totem-screensaver.c?h=gnome-3-4#n64

Which version of Totem are you using?
Comment 2 André Klapper 2012-05-11 13:39:21 UTC
According to http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/allpackages latest stable Ubuntu includes a version of Totem that is over a year old (totem 3.0.1-0ubuntu21) and not maintained anymore in upstream.

We are not interested in reports about Totem 3.0 in bugzilla.gnome.org.

Did you test this with a recent version (3.4) first?
Comment 3 Thomas Ward 2012-05-11 14:37:02 UTC
I am unable to test, as I (personally) am on KDE. I only upstreamed the bug, according to BugSquad protocol.

I will make a note of this to the Ubuntu devs, if they're using year-old software on an LTS or on current development releases, they'll need to update.

As well, Debian is out-of-date with Totem as well. If I may ask, has the GNOME team for Totem decided to not update Debian or Ubuntu with up-to-date versions of the Totem package?

The "GNOME team for Totem" is responsible for neither Debian nor Ubuntu packages.

Distributions themselves decide which software and versions they want to package and ship. In this case see e.g. http://jeremy.bicha.net/2012/02/01/gnome-versions-for-ubuntu-1204/ for info.

Closing upstream bug as OBSOLETE. Feel free to reopen if this still happens in 3.4.
