Description:
When installing java jre 1.3.1_02, it cause gnome to err well let call it crash.  I think "what ever it is worth" that some how the installation of java creates a cruption of the fonts files, then making gnome unusable.

This is a gnome-core issue

Please try the latest gnome-libs and gnome-core packages available
from http://download.gnome.org/

These have fixes for many crashes and other bugs in both packages.
