There is a bug in the graphics driver where the backlight level is set to 0 when the display is turned on. So in these cases GDM comes up on my internal laptop lcd very dark. For some reason my brightness keys on the keyboard don't work either.

Brightness keys not working has the same reason as bug 643111 - GDM mode uses a system modal dialog, which means that the shell has a keyboard grab, so gnome-settings-daemon is blocked from handling shortcuts.
