Description Alex Hultman 2012-04-07 00:29:30 UTC
I have noticed a big performance regression in the new gnome shell 3.4. I run an installed and up to date Fedora 17 Beta RC3 with git mesa3d. Everything except the overview has okay graphical performance.

Dragging a window in overview is a lot slower than in Fedora 16. Gnome 3.0 was slow then Gnome 3.2 got a lot faster and now Gnome 3.4 is as slow as Gnome 3.0 or even worse.

Is this a known issue?
Comment 1 Jasper St. Pierre (not reading bugmail) 2012-04-07 00:38:46 UTC
No, it's not.

Is there anything in ~/.xsession-errors that might point to a slowdown?

What graphics drivers and versions of cogl/clutter/mutter/gnome-shell are you using?

What about running the perf tool?
Comment 2 Alex Hultman 2012-04-07 00:55:11 UTC
mutter 3.4.0
GNOME Shell 3.4.0
clutter-1.10.0-3.fc17.i686
cogl-1.10.0-1.fc17.i686

xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.14.4-2.20120329gitde2419e55.fc17.i686 (but same regression with 6.14.3)

Mesa git (but even worse regression with default 8.0.2

r600g

Fedora 16 ran really quick with git mesa but any Gnome 3.4 livecd / installation is really slow when in overview.

My ~/.xsession-errors lists some errors and warnings but it's mostly Rhythmbox & Wine stuff.

How do i run the performance tool? Google it?

Possibly related to bug 670636?

Alex, can you try the patch attached there?
Comment 4 Alex Hultman 2012-04-07 11:20:41 UTC
I tried Stefano's patch and it brings back the snappy Fedora 16 feel :D

Problem is, there should be no need of it :(

Since I have an ATI card, too, now the question is: is anyone experiencing this issue with something else than ATI?
Comment 6 Alex Hultman 2012-04-07 11:48:23 UTC
I actually have another nvidia card laying around. Did you notice a performance gain on your machine using amd/ati?
Comment 7 Alex Hultman 2012-04-07 12:29:35 UTC
I get the same regression & gain on my GeForce 210 / xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-0.0.16-35.20120306gitf5d1cd2.fc17.i686

It's like night and day.
Comment 8 Alex Hultman 2012-04-07 13:25:19 UTC
Same thing with proprietary nvidia drivers. This doesn't seem to be a problem in the drivers.
