I ran into this problem a couple months ago, and eventually gave up and worked around it with another program.  Not sure if this is a general problem with exporting mail as mbox, or if it is limited to emails which were originally imported from some other program (perhaps with a different/problematic encoding?).

I just verified it using version 3.2.3 on Arch Linux.  I first saw it back on whatever version was current on Fedora 16 around the end of December 2011.
