The issue was raised on https://launchpad.net/bugs/921039

Using GNOME 3.2.2:

"A user was attempting to access the system settings but could not find them because she typed in "preferences". 'System Settings' should be improved to include the search query, 'preferences'"

The gnome-control-center.desktop files should perhaps list a few Keywords= including "preference"?
