This is fundamentally the same as bug 164556. The fix for that was landed on 2005-01-21 as <http://git.gnome.org/browse/libxml2/commit/?id=b8590d4c1a94b29fd55b7974ff2b77e135813c91> appears to have been accidentally rolled out later that day in <http://git.gnome.org/browse/libxml2/commit/?id=1441251f851f011cd34edaff9095374d5e6f7b14>.

It would be great to get b8590d4 reapplied.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/libxml2/-/issues/
