GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 666958
Ability to disable calendar panel
Last modified: 2013-05-29 23:55:54 UTC
I don’t use calendar. Sorry. So, having permanently a « This day: Nothing / Tomorrow: Nothing / Open calendar→ Execution of Evolution failed: no such command » panel is quite useless for me, and it looks like I cannot disable it. I report the bug here cause I don’t know the best way to resolve it. It should be an extension to remove it; or an extension by default to have it, that could be removed; or maybe, in gnome-control-center→system information→favorite applications, a possibility to tell: « Calendar: None ».
"Permanently"? You have to click on the date to see it, else it doesn't disturb you at all. What's the problem with it? There are many features on your system you probably never use, and that's not a big deal. You can write an extension of course. But as far as the main design is involved, I think it will be Won't fix, sorry.
The left part of the panel is designed for everyone, and may be useful in plenty of opportunities. The right part is independent, involves practices that everyone hasn’t necessarily, and looks crazily confusing when not using it. It shouldn’t be imposed, even if it’s at the right place for people that have use of it.
I agree with the bug as reported - it's not very nice to constantly have that empty section on the right. Plus, 'Nothing Scheduled' can leave you feeling like a bit of a loser. I don't think an option is the best way to deal with the issue, however. Instead, we could present the no events case in a different way, or we could automatically hide the right hand pane when the calender is not in use.

We can probably detect that the calendar is completely empty, or at least empty for the next few weeks, and in that case hide it. Hiding the pane when there are no events schedules for the next two days could make users believe it's disappeared. It can often happen that no event is set in my calendar for a few days, but I'd still like to be sure there's nothing. Another problem is that if we hide the calendar until events are added, people won't discover this nice feature. I personally started using Evolution's calendar when the Shell became able to show the events quickly in from the top bar. If this is completely hidden, some people will never realize this. So I think even when hiding the pane, some indication like "Add an event" should be shown.
I’ve made an extension¹ to hide the Planning, as a temporary solution. 1) https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/153/nothingtodo/
We no longer show the events pane when there are no calendars. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 680083 ***
