Screenshot of Totem - menu is not showing (should appear to the right of the words 'Movie Player').

For example, that is why I haven't specified which Version it is. As far as I know, it is the latest because I generally run software updates whenever they're available.

I have tried opening the application by (a) double-clicking on an '.avi' file (Totem is my default application for movies) and (b) opening Totem from the Dash.

Neither of these has caused the menu to show.

I had a similar problem (and nearly decided to report it) a few weeks ago but I think Totem was included in one of the updates, and I haven't seen the problem since then.

Looks like it would be showing under the panel, which is only likely to happen if it was fullscreen and your window manager crashed. Did you window manager crash?

I don't know exactly what that would be like, so that means probably not. Nothing unusual has happened that I've noticed.

It happens on fullscreen, and also if I shrink the Totem window to e.g. half its normal size.

Then please show me the problem when it's half size because I can't really see the problem here when where the menu bar would be might be hiding under the top panel.

I got your message and I tried, but it's working today. That is to say, the menus are appearing. This has happened before - is there any reason you are aware of that might cause this to happen intermittently? I generally only run one operation at a time on my computer.
Comment 5 Bastien Nocera 2011-12-19 10:28:49 UTC
No. Totem has no functionality to hide the menubar without hiding every other part of the UI but the video canvas.

OK thanks. I'll leave it for now, and see if it happens again when I use it. Please feel free to close this bug report.

Ha, Ubuntu.

Their "global menu" stuff is probably breaking half of the time, which would explain the problem you're seeing.

I've reported a bug to Ubuntu, because I was also experiencing the same problem with Rhythmbox. That bug report includes links to this bug and to the similar one in Rhythmbox.

I notice you say 'Ha, Ubuntu' - does that mean there is another distribution that you use because it's better somehow? I've used Fedora, PC Linux OS, and some others but Ubuntu overall has so far been the best.

I don't use Ubuntu, and my distribution doesn't ship with hacks like the global menu which causes your particular problem. You're free to make your own distribution choices, but I'm entitled to judge distributions if they create bug reports for me because of their choice of software.
Comment 11 el_gallo_azul 2012-01-08 01:14:49 UTC
Understood.

All distributions will be a compromise in one way or another. I suppose I'm lucky that it's not me that gets the bug reports!

Thanks
