Example of postscript file which has problem.

The system being used is a nearly virgin Linux, Ubuntu 11.10. Have seen bug on both the i386 and x86_64 installations.

I have a PostScript file which is a drawing produced by a drafting program Pro/Engineer by a "save to file" print operation. A copy of the file is attached. The pro/E program gives the file the default ".plt" file extension, but it is simply a generic PostScript file.

Viewing the file within Nautilus shows it recognized as Type "PS document". However, when we double click to open it, Evince (Document Viewer) is launched and shows the error "Unable to open document, Error opening file: Permission denied". However, double clicking on the same file with a ".ps" extension opens the file correctly within Evince. The error also appears when I try to open the plt file from within Evince (File / Open / All Files).

We also note that when viewing the directory within Nautilus, the version of the file with the ps extension shows an icon image of the file, but the plt extension version does not.

Forgot to say, Evince (Document Viewer) is version 3.2.1 Using libspectre (0.2.6), which is what is in the standard Ubuntu 11.10. Nautilus is 3.2.1 as well.

I can't reproduce on my machine (fedora 16)... Maybe this is a silly question, but are you sure that the file has the right permissions? Usually the error you would get would be something like plt mimetype is not recognized or so... So this is at least weird. I'll take a quick look what could be generating the error. Calling evince from a shell and using strace might give some hints on what's going on.
Comment 6 Bill Faust 2011-11-18 02:28:07 UTC
Permissions are the same. This is an NFS mounted directory.

wpf@la01:~/Downloads/bugzilla$ ls -l
total 608
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wpf wpf 287850 2011-11-17 09:05 400-150166-005-a.plt
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wpf wpf 287850 2011-11-17 09:05 400-150166-005-a.ps
wpf@la01:~/Downloads/bugzilla$

I just downloaded the two files to my home system to see if I could reproduce it here, but could not reproduce bug. Both files open up fine (Ubuntu 11.04, Nautilus 2.32.2.1, Evince Document Viewer 2.32.0.

However, I *was* able to reproduce the bug on my home system when I simply moved the directory over to an NFS mounted area. It must be related to NFS. I am being called for dinner. More later.

This looks like some sort of strange permissions issue that is due to NFS. NFS server (for both work and home systems) is a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo running firmware 4.1.8 [1.00a043] (which is running Linux).

hal:~# uname -a
Linux hal 2.6.17.14ReadyNAS #1 Thu Sep 1 17:44:33 PDT 2011 padre unknown
hal:~#

So I would say I have a strange NFS permissions issue which manifests within Evince as requiring a ".ps" extension on a file to open correctly. Any ideas where to look?

There is a similar problem with PDF's. It seems to me this a general bug in Evince rather than PS or PDF backend. Marking as duplicated of the older bug.

This is not a duplicate of 661936, that bug is Windows specific.
