With non-ancient libtool (>= 2.2) there is no longer a significant
speed difference.

The version of dolt that was included was anyway a NOP on architectures
where build speed matters much (e.g. ARM).

This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
