GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 662231
AIM chat does not save / accept password
Last modified: 2011-10-25 15:22:48 UTC
OS: Ubuntu 11.10. (Oneiric Ocelot) Machine: Asus EEE 1000 PC Other chat clients connect without problems (Gtalk, ICQ, Yahoo). Only AIM refuses to connect. The AOL chat client keeps saying 'password required'. I have deleted the account, then recreated it, as a way of ensuring that the correct PWD is entered. Could it be due to some new changes by AOL?
Since this is an Asus notebook, I also checked in a blank text file that I did NOT have my CAPS LOCK on, so I am sure that the password is correctly entered
Could you please attach a dbus-monitor log and the logs from empathy-auth-client as well?
I am UNABLE to find the above mentioned logs! Using the Gnome Log Viewer in Unity, I can see the folders listed in /var/logs: folders: "apt" through "unattended upgrades", then individual files (*in alphabetical order*: "alternatives.log" through "Xorg.0.log.old". Surely the system should automatically create and save those logs you mentioned? FWIW: This was a clean install of Oneiric Ocelot, I manually selected that / and swap go on the first SSD (/dev/sda1), and /home go on the second SSD (/dev/sdb1). I have deleted the AIM account, closed and restarted Empathy, recreated the account. I even shut down the netbook last night, then restarted Empathy and created a fresh AIM client. The problem *IS* repeatable and consistent. Shouldn't ALL logs be in /var/logs? I have enabled 'view hidden folders" and cannot even find them in my /{username}/home folder...
That's not the right tool. Use the empathy-debugger; you can start it from the Help -> Debug menu in Empathy.

I have Empathy set to connect four protocols at launch: AIM, Gtalk, ICQ, Yahoo Chat. Yesterday, I tried the following: I launched Empathy, and disabled all the other protocols. AIM connected without error. Then I started the other protocols *while* Empathy was running. A few similar tests confirms that for some reason the problem happens when *any* other protocols are launched at startup of the app: either individually, or all together. While writing this, I am running Empatny, and running the Debug tool. I will now close Empathy and save the result (attached: mission-control-21-10-11_09-35-43.log)
That's mission-control logs; you need to pick Empathy.AuthClient in the combobox. Anyway, problem is probably: mcd-DEBUG: 11-10-21 09:33:44.682895: on_connection_ready: got error: Error requesting https://api.screenname.aol.com/auth/clientLogin: Unable to connect to api.screenname.aol.com: SSL peer presented an invalid certificate Looks like a libpurple issue but then it's weird you managed to connect when having only one account. Does it work with Pidgin?
I haven'tried Pidgin. FWIW, on my Macbook I have no problems connecting all my protocols with Adium, but that's a different OS, of course. Now attaching the correct log as requested...

I have just installed Pidgin 2.10.0 (libpurple 2.10.0), but did not install additional plugins, etc. *All* protocols load simultaneously without problems. So it does not seem to be a problem with libpurple.
Looks like something is going wrong in telepathy-haze. Can you attach its logs as well please?
here is the haze log.

Yeah that seems to be a telepathy-haze issue. Please report to bugs.freedesktop.org
